Comparing 9, the short, and 9, the Full-Length Movie

 Short Film: Impressions and Conventions

The short film 9 creates a dark and mysterious dystopian world in a very short amount of time. The plot is simple and focuses more on the idea and mood rather than a detailed story. There is very little character development, but this works because the characters are meant to represent ideas like survival and curiosity instead of being fully explained people. The special effects and animation are strong and help tone of the film. The use of dark colors, shadows and very little dialogue makes the film feel tense and emotional. Shane Acker’s directing style relies heavily on visuals instead of dialogue. Overall, the short film uses atmosphere and symbolism to tell its story.

Full-Length Film: Impressions and Conventions

The full-length version of 9 expands the original idea into a more complete story. The plot is more detailed and includes a clear backstory, conflict, and ending. Each character is given a specific personality and role. Which makes them easier to remember and relate to. This added character development helps the audience connect emotionally to the story. The animation and special effects are more advanced in the feature film with larger action scenes and more detailed settings. While the dark visual style stays the same, the directing follows more traditional movie conventions, such as longer dialogue scenes and a clear hero’s journey. This makes the film feel more like a typical animated feature rather than an experimental short film.

Comparison of the Short Film and the Full-Length Film

The short film is very effective at creating mood and mystery in a short amount of time. Its simplicity and lack of explanation make it feel more symbolic and artistic. These qualities are not as strong in the full-length film. Which focuses more on explaining the story and characters. The full-length film however, succeeds in developing the characters and storyline in ways the short film cannot. It provides more context and a clearer ending. Which helps the audience understand the world better. Personally, I enjoyed the short film more because it felt more unique and relied on visual storytelling. While the full-length film was more entertaining because of its action and character relationships. The main difference in conventions is that the short film focuses on atmosphere. While the feature film follows a more traditional narrative structure.
