Comparing Le Jetee, the Short, and 12 Monkeys, the Full-Length Movie
In this blog, I've discussed the short film Le Jetée and the full length movie 12 monkeys. Both of these films are centered around the idea of time and time travel. After watching the video, I realized that they both show how some events are bound to happen. In le Jetée, the protagonist is stuck in a time loop that cannot be broken from and is in a repetitive cycle. This shows how his fate is controlling his life. In 12 Monkeys, its explained that the protagonist is to prevent a major event from happening. Which creates tension and suspense. Both of the films show that time manipulation can convey a powerful story. They also use time manipulation to build emotional meaning. Le Jetée describes more about how time cannot be altered and how it's fixed. However, 12 Monkeys is shown more as how the past can be changed. The article explains how Le Jetée explores memory more. 12 Monkeys adds different themes like mental illness which makes it seem more realistic. This helps the story seem more complex. The protagonist in Le Jetée is a victim of time. In 12 Monkeys the protagonist puts effort to shifting the past to change the future outcome. This difference shows the main purpose of each story. Overall, these films helped me understand how visuals can have an impact on meaning and emotions. They also showed me how editing and structure work together to shape a story. This helped me better with understanding how film makers create meaning.
